Appearance & structure

Two surfaces can share the same gloss value and the same colour value and still look completely different. The reason is structure: fine waviness in the coating film that shows up as orange peel, or a blurred reflection. An instrument scans the surface optically and separates the structure into wavelength ranges — short wave, long wave, distinctness of image. Exactly that separation indicates whether the cause lies in application, in flow, or in the substrate.

With transparent materials the question runs the other way: how much light passes through, how strongly is it scattered, how clearly does an image behind it remain visible. Haze and clarity are measured in transmission and are the usual figures for films, sheets and glass. Important is the distinction from reflection haze on high-gloss coatings — that belongs to gloss measurement and is captured with different instruments.
