Determine dry and wet film thickness non-destructively — on steel, on non-ferrous metal and in multi-layer build-ups.
Coating thickness decides corrosion protection, hiding power, shade and cost all at once. Too thin means failure in the field, too thick means material given away on every single part. On ferromagnetic substrates the magnetic induction method applies, on aluminium and other non-ferrous metals the eddy current method; neither destroys the coating and both deliver the value in seconds.
It gets difficult with multi-layer build-ups on non-conductive substrates — coating on plastic, for instance — and when the question is not total thickness but the individual layer. Ultrasonic methods resolve the build-up layer by layer. Wet film, by contrast, is measured directly after application with a comb or wheel: the simplest check there is, and the only one that still allows you to intervene during application.
