Produce reproducible test films — film applicators, bar coaters and test charts as the basis of every comparable measurement.
Every measurement is only as good as the sample. If the film is drawn down by hand, speed and pressure vary from one time to the next — and with them film thickness, flow and ultimately every reading. A motor-driven film applicator keeps speed and pressure constant and only then makes comparable what is meant to be compared: two formulations, two batches, two suppliers.
The choice of applicator and substrate is part of the method. Gap and spiral applicators deliver different wet film thicknesses and suit different viscosities; test charts with black and white fields are the standard for hiding power, while metal or glass panels are required wherever mechanical testing or stoving follows. This choice is written explicitly into most test standards — it is not an accessory detail.
What matters when choosing
Wet film thickness and viscosity determine the type of applicator
Choose the substrate according to the subsequent test: chart, panel or glass
Coating area and number of parallel lanes per trial
Constant speed — the key difference from a hand drawdown
Cleaning and wear of the applicators in daily use
Storage of test charts: humidity changes the substrate

Data sheets, operating manuals and quotations are available on request. We quote prices individually, because configuration, accessories and the scope of calibration decide the figure.
After the purchase
An instrument is only worth something once its readings hold up. Calibration, adjustment, repair and operator training are handled from Aesch — the same contact, the same language.
Corvus, our knowledgeable raven, advises you on BYK-Gardner test and measurement instruments: gloss, colour, film thickness, viscosity, physical testing and more — straight from the technical data sheets.
🔭
From the original data sheets
Corvus draws on the instruments' technical documents — measuring ranges, standards, specifications.
📊
From requirement to instrument
He asks about the measuring task, substrate and standard — and only then recommends a specific instrument.
