An instrument without valid calibration delivers numbers but no evidence. Anyone working to ISO 9001, or having to substantiate values to a customer, needs traceability to a recognised reference and a defined check interval. Between calibrations the supplied reference standard takes over the daily function check: one measurement on the standard before the first sample is measured.
Reference standards are themselves consumables. Scratches, fingerprints and ageing change the nominal value, which is why the standard too has to be checked and replaced at intervals — a point regularly forgotten in practice.
