Gloss is the property people argue about most, because the eye recognises it instantly but cannot put a number on it. A reflectometer measures how much light a surface reflects specularly at a defined angle and turns the impression into a figure in gloss units. Only then can a batch be released, a complaint be substantiated, or a tolerance be agreed at all.
The measuring angle follows the gloss range: 60° is the standard angle for the mid range, 20° resolves more finely in high gloss, and 85° separates matt surfaces that all look alike at 60°. Instruments with three angles in one housing take that decision off your hands. If haze is involved — the milky halo beside the reflection — an additional haze measurement is needed; it explains why two panels with identical gloss values can look different.
