Gloss measurement

Gloss is the property people argue about most, because the eye recognises it instantly but cannot put a number on it. A reflectometer measures how much light a surface reflects specularly at a defined angle and turns the impression into a figure in gloss units. Only then can a batch be released, a complaint be substantiated, or a tolerance be agreed at all.

The measuring angle follows the gloss range: 60° is the standard angle for the mid range, 20° resolves more finely in high gloss, and 85° separates matt surfaces that all look alike at 60°. Instruments with three angles in one housing take that decision off your hands. If haze is involved — the milky halo beside the reflection — an additional haze measurement is needed; it explains why two panels with identical gloss values can look different.

What matters when choosing

• The gloss range of the surface dictates the angle — when in doubt, use a three-angle instrument
• Clarify the test standard required by the customer or quality system beforehand
• Measurement spot size must suit the part geometry, especially on small or curved parts
• Mobile use in production or stationary laboratory work
• Statistics, data storage and connection to your QC evaluation
• Plan the calibration standard and check interval from the start
