Light booths & visual colour assessment

Even where measurement is used, visual assessment remains the last step before release. It is only dependable if the illumination is defined: daylight at the window changes by the hour, workshop lighting from bay to bay. A light booth provides standardised illuminants and thereby creates the condition for two assessors in two places to reach the same verdict.

The real reason for the booth is metamerism: two samples that look identical under one illuminant and differ clearly under another. Anyone checking under a single light source discovers this only at the customer. Switching between daylight, store and incandescent light — plus the UV illuminant for optical brighteners — exposes it in seconds.

What matters when choosing

• Required illuminants — which does your customer explicitly demand
• Booth size according to sample format, not to available bench space
• Ambient light in the room must be shielded, otherwise the booth is ineffective
• Document lamp operating hours and replace them in good time
• Neutral grey surroundings and a defined viewing angle
• Combine with instrumental measurement rather than replacing it
